Our Class Gifts: A Quick History

The Class of ’70 has not ignored Rutgers in the years since we graduated – and yet again, you soon will be asked to contribute towards a 40th Reunion Gift.  Something memorable, distinctive, special.  Exactly what?  That’s under discussion and, certainly, your input is valued.  To get involved in this giving campaign, contact the class president, Charlie Carroll at charliecarroll@rutgers70.org.

What’s happened to past Class of 70 funds?  The Class’s major effort has been scholarships for undergraduates and we now have an endowed fund that will contribute $1000 per year to qualifying Rutgers students.  Strong preference goes to legacies (children of members of the Class of ’70, or grandchildren), and to date only legacies have received Class of 1970 scholarships.  If you have a child or grandchild who is at Rutgers, be sure to urge them to notify Admissions that they may qualify for a Class of 1970 scholarship.

Presently six Rutgers students are receiving Class of 1970 scholarships. Four attend Rutgers College, one is at Cook, one is at Douglass.

This scholarship, because it is endowed, is a permanently funded memory of the Class of 1970.

The Class has given a medley of other gifts and will continue to do so.  Past, major gifts include:

O $50,000 to Alexander Library (on our 25th reunion).  We have a plaque at the main circulation desk in recognition of this gift.

O $15,000 to Zimmerli Museum, on the occasion of our 30th reunion.  Another $15,000 was given to Zimmerli at our 35th reunion and, in consequence, the Class of 1970 now has a plaque in an important Russian art gallery.

O $10,000 to Kirkpatrick Chapel, for restoration of stained glass windows.  Also in our 30th reunion campaign.

o $20,000 for "The Class of 1970 Lecture Series," which will fund five lectures in the period 2006-2010.  The aim of the series is to bring in leading scholars to the Banks.  In a unique twist, these lectures will be coordinated by undergraduates, working in harness with a faculty adviser and a representative of the Class of 1970.  In effect, undergrads are being empowered to bring in the lecturer they most want to hear.  Lectures will be open to the public and members of the Class of 1970 will be invited as honored guests.  The first Class of 1970 Lecture will bring a distinguished philosopher to the Banks in Spring 2006, in association with the Rutgers Philosophy Dept., the university's most distinguished academic unit.  Department chair Peter Klein has agreed to act as an informal adviser to help ensure great success for the kickoff event.  An initial write-up is here.  Stay tuned for more details.

What will we give for our 40th – which, incidentally, is traditionally a major campaign at Rutgers?  Let’s get creative.  Think up new ideas.  1970 was a special time to graduate from college.  Let our gifts be as special!  Speak up about what’s important to you!
