Letter from Our Class President The Class of '70 Speaks Up
Memory Lane: |
It was a sunny, beautiful day on the Banks, as the Class of 1970 gathered on May 13th to celebrate its 36th reunion. Attendees included: Charlie CarrollNeil Magnus Peter Jewell Don Connolla Bill McBride Rich Levao Gene Fricks Robert McGarvey Thousands more alums of course also gathered at the Old Queens Assembly and marched down College Avenue. Invariably this is a pleasant stroll down what is arguably Rutgers' prettiest stretch of real estate -- but the 2006 Reunion was sweetened by the beautiful weather. At the RAA luncheon, a new, more pugnacious tone was struck as speakers -- from university president Richard McCormick to RAA leaders -- exhorted the crowd to contact their legislators in Trenton and demand more funding for Rutgers. New Jersey of course faces an immense financial crunch and many public budgets will be cut. The hope at Rutgers is to suffer less than the university might if alumni do not speak up. Fyi: the Friends of Rutgers is an advocacy group created to lobby for the university. It's a fast way to get started working on behalf of the school. In addition to the standard Reunion Weekend activities (golf and touring the athletic facilities), the university in 2006 began to experiment with new ways to connect alums with the school. Case in point: an English Department open house where various professors talked about their most recent books, such as Professor William Galperin who engagingly discussed the main themes in The Historical Austen, a book that seeks to come to grips with how her contemporaries viewed Jane Austen and also how her novels reflected back contemporary mores. In future years, perhaps more departments will hold open houses to acquaint alums with cutting edge research. A sidenote is that also at the English open house was Ron Levao (RC 70), an English department faculty member (and the pointman on the Class's upcoming Lecture). Ron swapped some memories of great faculty from our era (Dick Poirier, for instance), and offered insights into the excellence of Rutgers English (a top 20 program by any yardstick).
